A Third McKenzie?

In the Boxing family, the name of McKenzie rings several bells.

Duke McKenzie carved his name into the record books winning word titles on five occasions, whilst Clinton McKenzie managed to pick up British and European titles.

Well it appears another McKenzie is about to try and make his mark in the pugilistic world, Leon McKenzie.

Leon is the son of Clinton and the nephew of Duke but his story is slightly different to many ther fighters.

You see Leon is 35 years of age and has already had a career as a professional footballer, most notably with Norwich City. In his career, Leon scored 115 goals in 405 games before retiring in 2011.

However retirement from football brought about its own problems with Leon sinking into bouts of depression before deciding he wanted to be a fighter.

Speaking about the switch from ball to gloves, Leon had this to say,

'I wouldn't be coming into it just to get out again.”

'I'm 35, so I can't do it for long, but I believe I can achieve something.'

I've got through months and months of training camp, getting up at five in the morning for runs. I'm doing what I've got to do.'

'I sort of lost my direction a little bit. When I had that time incarcerated I asked myself a lot of questions.”

'When I came out of there it just came to me and I just wanted to fight.”

I'm sparring with professionals now and coming out on top and that gave me the confidence to have a go at it.'

Leon makes his professional debut on June 29th, at the York Hall, against a yet to be named opponent. But we’ll be keeping an eye on how he gets on.
