Keeping an Eye on the Amateurs!

Whilst the majority of articles on this fledgling site will feature those who box for a profession, we will take the opportunity to offer the occasional article on those who box purely for their love of the sport and retain their amateur status.

The amateur game, more often than not, is a learning curve for those who wish to aspire to the professional game, it’s a school whereby skills are honed and styles are developed, but without the stamina needed to go a gruelling twelve rounds.

Right now, over in Minsk, Belarus, the European Championships are taking place and are approaching the latter stages, or as most would deem it the medal stages. The quarter-final bouts have taken place and three British fighters have secured spots in the semi-finals, thereby laying claim to at least a bronze, but hopefully better, medal.

These three are:-

Jake Bateson (light-flyweight)

Joe Joyce (super-heavyweight)

Andrew Selby (flyweight)

We will endeavour to follow their progress but in particular that of the super-heavyweight from London, Joe Joyce, everyone loves to see a good heavyweight emerge and who knows, Joyce could be the one to emulate the legend that is Lennox Lewis as we contemplate just where his career might end up, but then again we could have, heaven forbid, another Audley in the pipeline!

It's a crying shame highlights are so sparse on the BBC and we're having to wait until Sunday to see any action!
Red Boy
must admit I like the way they score in the amateurs, at least you know what is happening, even if they do miss some CLEAN punches
Al Billy
sadly, one of those three lost this afternoon - Bateson (to t e favourite)
Al Billy
