Cox Makes His Return

Hand injuries for boxers are an occupational injury, but when a hand injury keeps you out of the ring for almost two years, you know it’s serious.

This Saturday Jamie Cox makes his long awaited return to the ring after being side-lined for 21 months with a serious hand injury.

The former Olympian will be taking on the unbeaten Frenchman Matiouze Royer in Cox’s home town of Swindon at The Oasis, in a six round contest.

Talking about the hand injury he received in a bout against Ghana’s Obodai Sai, the 26 year old light-middleweight had this to say,

'I didn't think I'd get back into the ring.'

“I couldn't even open jars so I knew my hand was in a bad way”

'When I took my glove off after the fight, my hand was like a bowling ball.'

'Even Frank Warren said it was the worst hand he'd seen in all his years in professional boxing.”

I remember the shot that did it. I hit Obodai on the forehead. He was a tough, tough guy. I don't think I'll meet a tougher opponent for a long while yet.”

'It was a big shock, to say the least, to hear someone say they couldn't fix your hand. When Joe Calzaghe's hand specialist said that, obviously he's a top guy and you just have to think to yourself 'where do I go from here?' I got a little bit depressed.”

'I couldn't even open jars so I knew my hand was in a bad way and I didn't want to make it worse.'

It sounds like it was a really distressing time and with the purse strings having to be tightened severely, due to no ring earnings coming in, Jamie must be grateful to have finally secured a return to the ring.

As he contemplates fight number 17, we suspect that as the time to the fight approaches there will be a little anxiety in the Cox camp but come the sound of that first bell it will, hopefully, be business as usual for Jamie and we’d like to take this opportunity to wish him well.
