Macklin Outclassed by Golovkin

Over in Connecticut in the early hours of this morning Matthew Macklin’s bid to win a world title at the third attempt was cruelly undone by the explosive work of the WBA champion Gennady Golovkin.

In fact the Kazakhstani fighter not only defeated 31 year-old Macklin but could well have pushed the Birmingham fighter into retirement whilst also proving that he is the best middleweight this planet has to offer.

At a capacity venue, Macklin was never allowed to get into the fight with Golovkin proving to be the slicker and harder-hitting operative. The champions’ early work opened up a cut above Macklin’s left eye and having lost the first two rounds Macklin’s challenge was to end in the third round when a powerful body-shot saw the Birmingham fighter collapse to the canvas and unable to beat the count.

After the fight Macklin was generous in his praise for his victor, remarking in the post-fight interview,

'He's definitely the best kid I've ever fought.”

'I had a plan to exploit his weakness which was his lack of experience - he's only been 10 rounds once - but credit to him, he didn't even let me get into any kind of rhythm at all.”

'He was patient, he was hard to hit clean, kept the pressure on, picked his punches well and that body shot took it out of me.'

Golovkin, probably the best middleweight out there, extended his run to 27-0 with 24 of those wins coming by stoppage, whilst the loss took Macklin’s record to 29-5.

Having already lost world title fights against Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez, it’s hard to see a way back for Macklin at world level.

Could now be the time to reflect on what has been a good career but one that didn’t quite see him have what it takes to become a world champion, or can Macklin come again?

The way in which he was beaten would suggest he's not going to get another shot
