Crolla Shocks Rees (On Points)

Last time out the Welsh fighter, Gavin Rees, was defeated by the up and coming young star of American boxing Adrien Bromer.

Last night, having talked up a possible clash with Ricky Burns, for his WBO lightweight world title, Rees was expected to beat Anthony Crolla to re-establish his credentials as a world class operative.

But the script, as is often the case in boxing, wasn’t as simple as that.

Crolla, coming off of a poor run of results that had several questioning his future, produced a display that saw him get the verdict from two judges with the third making it an even contest.

The official scorecards read 115-113 and 116-113 to Crolla with the third score-card showing it as having ended 115-115

As for the fight, Rees started well but Crolla’s defence proved to be effective whilst also picking off the Welshman as he came forward. Blood was forthcoming in round 4 after a clash of heads; Crolla had the better of the action in the fifth as he started to take control, Rees tried to comeback in the seventh whilst an exchange of blows in the ninth saw Rees cut again after another clash of heads. A huge effort, in the final round, saw both men have success but it was to be Crolla who was to emerge with the WBO inter-continental title and looking towards bigger things whilst Rees, this morning, will be contemplating where his career will possibly take him next.

As for their respective records, Crolla’s stands at 26-4-1 whilst Rees’ stands at 37-3-1.
