Price Unbowed in Defeat

Doing better, second time around, doesn’t automatically mean you’ve succeeded.

Not even the fact that David Price, in sticking Tony Thompson on the seat of his pants and lasting five rounds this time around, will give the recently turned 30 Liverpudlian fighter comfort when he comes to the realization it’ll be a long way back to a place whereby he could fight for a world title.

Taking a second fight with Thompson, a fighter who looked even more up for it this time was always going to be a risky affair. Although Price made it a more thrilling fight this time around, the suspicion is there that he may well have been better off avoiding the American until he had gotten back to winning ways via a couple of other bouts.

Getting back into the ring with somebody who had ended your unbeaten record, and in such violent fashion, was always going to be an act of bravado rather than a calculated risk. After the fight, Price, naturally hugely disappointed, remarked,

“I don’t know what to say.”

“But I will carry on. What’s happened has happened, and I’m not going to run away from it.”

Talking about how the fight went Price had this to say to the media,

“Maybe my fighting heart got the better of me.”

“The instructions were to take my time and stick to the game plan but that was something I didn’t manage to do.”

“I put him down at the end of the second round and I thought I only needed to catch him again and he’ll go.”

“But obviously that wasn’t the case.”

“I’ll have to have a look back at it next week but I just need to come to terms with another defeat – another major disappointment.”

“It was a big occasion so I was more tense than usual so maybe it was that. I don’t know.”

An admirable attitude but in hindsight I wonder if the Price camp now rue the fact they took on this re-match when there were other opponents available as it now looks a very long way back for Price.
