Young Fury – Back in the Ring!

This Friday, over in Dundalk, another of the Fury clan is looking to progress on the heavyweight scene.

Hughie Fury, a relative novice with just 6 fights behind him, all victories and with four by way of knockout, will be taking on the journeyman Croatian fighter Ivicia Perkovic.

The match-up has been met with criticism from some quarters with many analysts reckoning that Hughie, in order to progress his career, needs to be meeting fighters of a higher calibre.

Perkovic will arrive in Dundalk with a record of 19 wins and 20 defeats, with 14 of those 20 wins coming by way of knockout.

However, it should also be pointed out Hughie’s opponent is approaching forty years of age and has lost 6 out of his last 8 fights.

But perhaps thought should be given to just how much of a novice Hughie is. Surely he’s at the stage whereby his camp needs to be careful who they match him up against. At eighteen years of age Hughie remains vulnerable, especially in a weight division where one punch, as we all know, can change everything.

Unfortunately, Hughie hasn’t helped matters by proclaiming that he has ambitions of beating the record set by the legend that is Mike Tyson and becoming the youngest ever heavyweight champion of the world.

This Friday I can’t see anything that Perkovic has to offer, at this late stage of his career, troubling Hughie and I fully expect the youngster to emerge as the winner in this 6 round contest but there will come a time, very shortly, whereby a risk might have to be taken with young Hughie Fury and put him into a fight whereby he’ll have to show if he really has got what it takes to become anything other than a young heavyweight with potential.

Like it has often been said, this wonderful sport of ours is tough, unforgiving and takes no prisoners, as Hughie Fury will soon find out!
