Matthews Pulls Knockout Punch Out of the Bag

On the undercard, at the Craven Arena in Hull, we were treated to a cracker of a fight between Derry Matthews (Liverpool) and Tommy Coyle (Hull).

At the weigh-in both fighters had shown their feisty nature with the event almost turning nasty.

Fighting for the Commonwealth light-welterweight bet, it was widely expected that Matthews would know too much for his 23 year-old opponent.

But that wasn’t the case!

Cheered on by the Hull crowd,Coyle showed that he wasn’t over-awed by the occasion catching Matthews with the cleaner punches and building up a steady lead.

Entering the 10th round, Coyle was leading by a good four rounds but somehow Matthews summoned up what many are describing as the best punch of his career to put Coyle on the canvas.

Coyle struggled to his fee and was looking to carry on, however the referee had other ideas and the fight was stopped.

After the fight, any pre-fight antagonism was forgotten as Matthews admitted his performance was below par, until he delivered that astonishing punch, commenting,

“I was absolutely terrible in there until I caught him with a perfect shot. I don’ believe I won a round tonight.”

Whereas Coyle accepted what had happened was part of the fight game, remarking,

“I put my heart and soul into that fight but this is what boxing is all about.”

Can I hear a call for a re-match?

I’m sure the public would lap one up!
