Saunders Ready to Seize His Chance

This Saturday, on the undercard of the Chisora v Scott fight, there is an appetizing encounter at middleweight.

The hugely popular Billy Joe Saunders will be locking horns with the Irishman Ryan O’Sullivan.

Saunders enters the fight as the British and Commonwealth champion and will be hoping to add O’Sullivan’s WBO international middleweight title to his collection.

Both fighters enter the ring unbeaten in the professional ranks with Saunders having won 17 out of 17 with 10 by way of knockout whilst O’Sullivan boasts a record of 16 won out of 16 also with 10 by way of knockout.

For both fighters it is a pivotal point in their careers, even more so with Saunders looking towards a world title fight in just over a years’ time.

Speaking about his world title aspirations, Saunders has remarked ahead of the fight,

“I’m only 23. I’m happy fighting people trying to get the world ranking.”

“Another 14 months and I reckon I’ll be fighting up there for the big titles.”

As is often the case, it’ll be 14 months that’ll fly by. However Saunders, quite rightly, is quick to dispel any inferences that he has taken the threat O’Sullivan presents too lightly, commenting,

“I’m in the game to fight the best. To get to the top of the ladder and those world titles you can’t be taking easy fights.”

“O’Sullivan is a world class fighter. People are saying ‘you’re taking him likely because you’ve got John Ryder in line for 21 September.”

“But I take every fight as seriously as my pro debut. I want to get the win and look good doing it and the only way you can do that is by putting the graft in.”

With a fight against John Ryder lined up for 21st September, at the Olympic Park Copper Box Arena, Saunders team appear to have a path to glory marked out but both the fight against O’Sullivan and the forthcoming one against Ryder will be very tough encounters which should either prove, or disprove, whether Saunders has what it takes to realize his world title aspirations where the likes of Sergio Gabriel Martinez and Genady Golovkin operate.
