Hughie Fury Makes it 8-0

But there are so many questions left unanswered!

Fighting a the WonderWorld Xscape, in Milton Keynes yesterday afternoon, the emerging young heavyweight Hughie Fury chalked up win number 8 of his professional career by beating, on a points decision, Moses Matova.

Matova, twice Hughie Fury’s age, is a journeyman professional with a record of 4-29-4 and a fighter who Hughie had fought previously, last May, in Belfast.

The fight over four rounds was scored 4-35 by the referee Alvin Finch, exactly the same score as when the duo had met back in Belfast.

The fight, arranged at short notice and given minimal publicity may have extended Hughie’s unbeaten record but we learned very little about the fighter. In fact taking on Matova again may have dented Hughie’s credibility and that of his management team.

Normally when fighters take on an opponent for the second time it is seen as a challenge to better the result of the first meeting but Hughie failed to do that and Matova arrived in Milton Keynes having lost his last 12 fights and with a record of never having stopped an opponent.

Surely yesterday was an occasion whereby the young and hungry fighter should have taken a few risks instead of relying on his right jab which seems to be the basis of his whole career so far.

Now previously I’ve defended Hughie, pointing out that at 18 he has time on his side, but with his manager, Peter Fury, insisting his fighter will remain active and meet a better class of opponent in the very near future, there are doubts that young Hughie just might not be up to the task let alone claim that he’s going to beat Mike Tyson’s record and become the youngest heavyweight champion of the world in history!
