Barker – That Sixth Round

Late last night, with the family all fast asleep, I took the opportunity to watch a re-run of Darren Barker’s epic world title win over Daniel Geale.

In the solitude of my front room I watched in awe as Darren produced the performance of a lifetime to edge home on a split decision.

But, once again, the moment in the fight that caught my eye and, once again, had me on my fight cheering, came in that sixth round.

Caught by a huge body punch and slumped on the canvas, Darren looked as if he wouldn’t beat the count, but he dragged himself to his feet only to be met with a barrage of punches that rocked his head back.

At one stage it looked as if the referee was going to step in and stop the fight, but incredibly Darren found the energy and strength to launch his own attack and forced the champion onto the back foot.

Discussing that moment, after the fight, Darren had this to say,

“He caught me right in the solar plexus and completely took my breath away.”

“I was in bits when Daniel floored me and I was gone but, as the count went on, it was mad.”

“The faces of Gary and my daughter Scarlett-Rose got in my head and it made me get up.”

Darren was also to tweet afterwards that the good wishes his fans had sent him prior to the fight also contributed to him climbing off the canvas.

Continuing to discuss the remarkable night, Darren also added,

“That was the only round that made it close. When I stuck to my boxing I was winning rounds easy but I let the occasion get to me and go a bit gung-ho.”

“I watched loads of videos of Daniel and thought there was no way he was going to beat me but he was tricky and clever with his footwork.”

Indeed Geale did show the heart of a champion, rocking Darren several times in the last round but, as we all know, it was to be Darren’s night and what a memorable night it was for British Boxing.
