What Next For Cleverly

In the aftermath of the devastating defeat inflicted upon Nathan Cleverly, by his Russian opponent Sergey Kovalev, Nathan has stepped forward with a few words.

Nathan, who saw his unbeaten record ended and any chances of a mega-fight in the US put on hold, put on a brave face remarking,

“Obviously when it happens it is devastating. But it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Fair play to Kovalev, the guy hits hard with those little gloves on. It shakes your brain when they catch you on the head and obviously he kept the pressure on.”

It’s great to see a beaten boxer showing so much humility in defeat, but his promoter, Frank Warren, now has a hard job to do getting Nathan’s career back on track, but Frank, in the aftermath of the devastating defeat is of the belief that Nathan didn’t fight the right fight, remarking,

“Nathan did not fight the fight he should have. I expected him to keep Kovalev on the back foot, but he didn’t manage that.”

So where does Nathan go from here?

We’re led to believe that the contract for the Kovalev fight didn’t have a re-match clause in it but that doesn’t prevent Warren from trying to secure one, although on the evidence of Saturday night it doesn’t seem the best option with Warren remarking to the media,

“We’ll see what happens with regards to any re-match.”

“It’s early days; we’ll let him have a break. It’s all a bit raw at the moment we’ll have a chat in a few weeks and see where we go. There isn’t a rematch clause but I’m sure we can talk. At this stage I’m not even thinking of a rematch.”

Time to ponder, think and see what options are available methinks!
