Maloney Calls It a Day

Running through the content of the sports pages, as I do each morning, I noticed that there was a small piece, barely more than fifty words, informing us that Frank Maloney had decided to quit Boxing.

Firstly the news, if true, saddens me and secondly, if true, surely the wonderful Mr Maloney deserved more than just a few words.

Maloney has been like a beacon shining in our sport, his enthusiasm and the aura that surrounded him made him so different from so many others.

Just as Frank Warren had, Maloney muscled his way into the sport upsetting the equilibrium that Barrett and Duff had held steady for so many years.

Frank’s greatest achievement, in my mind, was taking Lennox Lewis to the heights of the world title, navigating a route for the London born boxer that saw Lewis firmly established as a national figure and a heavyweight that will always be remembered as one of the best ever.

An abiding memory of those times will always be the flamboyant suits Frank wore, particularly the one that resembled the Union flag and let the world know that a British boxer ruled the roost occupied for so long by American fighters.

But recently, Frank had struggled to come to terms with the tragic death of one of his fighters, when the Irish Olympian turned professional Darren Sutherland took his own life. From that moment on, you got the opinion that Frank was finding it difficult to stay in love with the sport he’d loved for so long.

Therefore, after 30 years as a promoter, Frank will bow out of a sport he’s fallen out of love with, remarking,

“My heart is no longer in the sport that I loved so much.”

Frank’s absence will be noticed but when you’re sat there reminiscing about the great moments this sport of ours has given us, you can bet that Frank will feature somewhere in those wonderful flashbacks.

I’m sure we’ll see you around Frank and thanks for the memories.
