'If It's Boxing, It's Vital'

Back in at the Deep End

You’ve got to hand it to Lee Purdy.

The Essex fighter having stepped in at short notice to take on Devon Alexander now faces a formidable foe in a European title fight.

Purdy, now 26 years of age, will be fighting for the European welterweight title against the Italian fighter Leonard Bundu, at a London venue that has still to be announced.

Bundu is rated at #4 by the IBF and is the reigning champion, although at 38 he may well have seen better days.

Purdy, keen to get back into world title contention after that battle with Alexander, a fight that saw Purdy retired by his corner after seven tough rounds, has described the fight as make-or-break stating he has no intention of returning to British fight level.

Declaring his intentions, Purdy has remarked to the media,

'I've fought one of the best fighters in the world and it would be a shame to come back down to British level.”

'I want to fight top 10, top five fighters in the world now.'

It would appear that mixing in the same company as Alexander has raised the bar somewhat. But Purdy, aware just how tough it can be at the top, has remarked about his opponent,

'He's ranked really high by top world governing bodies.”

'There's no excuses why I can't go for another world title next year.”

He's highly ranked, he's got the European title and he's unbeaten. It's my time now. This fight will make or break me.'

Indeed it will; a defeat would make it two on the bounce against world ranked opposition and expose any limitations Purdy may have.

But, often a defeat, to a top ranked fighter, can give a fighter added impetus, extend their ambition and prove to be just what the doctor ordered.

Let’s hope that’s the case with Purdy.
