Sprott Takes Prizefighter Crown

Watching the action last night at the York Hall, in Bethnal Green, the heavyweights were pitted against each other in the latest in the Prizefighter series.

But this time around there was a different theme to the event with four British heavyweights pitted against four American heavyweights.

Amongst the four American heavyweights was James Toney, a fighter of distinguished caliber.

The early action saw the Americans threaten to dominate the contest with the first two British fighters brushed aside.

But with the entrance of a former Prizefighter champion in the shape of Michael Sprott, in the third contest, the home support was given something to cheer.

Sprott was matched against Damien Wills and although the American looked the livelier in the opening round Sprott got his act together to take the contest.

The last quarter-final saw the vastly experienced Brain Minto taking on the bigger Tom Little. But Minto was the far busier of the two fighters and, quite rightly, took the verdict.

The opening semi-final saw an all-American clash between Toney and Jason Gavern. Gavern emerged victorious beating a shadow of the Toney we all remember.

Sprott, the only British fighter left in the competition, weathered an early attack from Brian Minto but got on top courtesy of Minto running out of steam to take the verdict.

The final saw Gavern try his hardest to get to Sprott but Sprott stayed calm to take the verdict on all three judge’s scorecards although the scoring did the American no favour for his gallant efforts.

All in all a good evening’s entertainment and our congratulations go to Sprott on his deserved success.
