Haye v Fury is OFF!

Sat within the comfort of my own four walls last night, just enjoying my Sunday evening and flicking through a few internet pages, the news flashed up that David Haye had undertaken a five hour operation.

The operation, in a Munich hospital, was to repair some damage to his right shoulder, damage that as it turns out has almost certainly ended the boxing career of one of our sports most colourful characters.

Advised by the doctors to call time on a career that saw him make the journey to the very pinnacle of his sport, the heavyweight championship of the world, there is now, naturally, no chance of the February date with Tyson Fury taking place.

Whilst the many fight fans who were eagerly awaiting the clash will be hugely disappointed, I doubt whether they’ll be as disappointed as the man currently recuperating in a Munich hospital bed.

Talking about the predicament Haye now finds himself in, the Bermondsey fighter has remarked to the media,

“The boxing gods keep hinting that enough is enough and that it’s time to finally hang up my gloves.”

“It’s a big crushing blow for me. I had big plans for next year and the ultimate goal was to win back the world heavyweight title.”

“What I didn’t anticipate was that this year would be the unluckiest of my career and that a number of injuries would disrupt my plans so much.”

“Perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be.”

“The surgery and subsequent results are a bitter pill to swallow because I truly felt I had a lot to offer.”

“But I’ve been boxing for 23 years now, amateur and pro, and this has clearly taken its toll on my body.”

Haye’s career may well have, most likely, ended somewhat prematurely but the cruiserweight who ascended to become the heavyweight world title holder has far more to look back on than so many others who have chosen the world of pugilistic values as their way of life.
