Bellew v Stevenson (WBC light-heavyweight) Preview

Over in Quebec City, in the early hours of Sunday morning (UK time), Liverpool’s Tony Bellew will attempt to take the WBC light-heavyweight title off of the splendidly named Adonis Stevenson.

For Bellew to do so would represent a huge achievement with Stevenson a huge favourite to retain his title.

However, Bellew is trying to draw some inspiration from a fellow Liverpudlian who achieved her status when he won the same title, back in 1974, John Conteh.

Conteh held the title between 1974 and 1977 and is said, by some, to be this country’s finest ever boxer.

Conteh, still involved in the boxing scene, is tipping Bellew to produce a shock believing he has the ability to do so, remarking ahead of the fight,

“Tony has the skills, height and reach and is very confident.”

“He trains very well, has prepared for it properly and is coming in at the right time. He’s just hitting his peak.”

But although he is the smaller man, Stevenson is a renowned puncher having won the title with a first round demolition of Chad Dawson, back in June, and has successfully defended it since forcing Tavoris Cloud into a seventh round retirement.

But Bellew oozes confidence, even if it did overflow just a little too much at the weigh-in where the two fighters heads came together far too often for my liking. Speaking after the weigh-in, Bellew had this to say,

“I’m 6 feet 3 inches tall and he is so small he looks like he’s fallen off my key-ring.”

“Stevenson’s fans are in for a rough ride – just like their hero.”

“I’m cool, calm and can’t wait, I’m taking his belt.”

Confident and brash words from the challenger, but we’ll leave the last word to John Conteh who talking about how the fight might go, remarked to the media,

“Tony’s well aware Stevenson is a big puncher.”

“But Tony can punch himself, he can whack. And Stevenson has been punched down before, he can be got to.”

That might be the case, but my money is on Stevenson to stop Bellew and head towards a unification bout against Sergey Kovalev.
