Barker Calls It a Day!

It’s the end of a glorious chapter of his life!

Many Boxing pundits suspected that when Darren Barker saw his IBF world middleweight belt disappear amidst the searing pain of a hip dislocation that his career might have been at an end.

The Chelsea supporting London fighter had endured so many injuries to realize his ambition of becoming a world title holder with that particularly euphoric moment coming over in Atlantic City back in August 2013.

That night will live long in the memory of anyone who has followed the career of Darren, getting off the floor towards the end of the 6th round, after being pole-axed by a body punch from Daniel Geale, showed everybody just how much Darren craved that belt.

Having lost two previous world title challenges, Darren’s emotions took over his body when it was announced that he was the new world champion, by a split decision, and I’m sure many a fan wiped away the odd tear that night.

Four months on, in Stuttgart, Darren faced Felix Sturm and his body, repaired so many times, couldn’t hold out any longer and with his hip dislocated his trainer, Tony Sims, threw the towel in during round two.

Today Darren announced his retirement from the sport, something we’d anticipated, remarking about his time as a pugilist,

“I’m so proud and happy at what I’ve achieved.”

“When I won my first national title as a kid, I could have retired a happy boy then so to have won all the major titles possible…I’m a very, very happy man.”


And so you should be Darren. You achieved something so few fighters do, you entertained us in so many ways, your emotions captivated us and that lap of honour you did, at Stamford Bridge, was well-deserved.

Take it easy champ and we’ll see you down the Bridge this Sunday.
