Woodhouse Wins British Title – Then Retires!

At the Hull Ice Arena last night, we witnessed a dream being realised and the end of a fairy tale.

Thirty-three year-old Curtis Woodhouse, who gave up his career as a professional footballer with Sheffield United to become a professional fighter won the British light-welterweight title, against Darren Hamilton, by a split decision.

Woodhouse, a massive underdog going into the fight showed enormous heart, stamina and a sprinkling of skill to take Hamilton to the final bell. It was one of those fights whereby the verdict could have gone to either fighter, however the judges decided, by a split decision, Woodhouse had done enough to claim the Lonsdale belt.

Sat on the ring apron, an emotional Woodhouse had this to say,

”The last thing I told my late father, Bernard, was I would become champ.”

'I have fought some really good guys but that was the hardest fight of my life.'

When pushed on a rumour that he may have had a hefty bet on himself to win, Woodhouse coyly admitted,

“I cannot confirm or deny I had a five-grand bet on myself to win at 50-1 – but the drinks are on me.”

However, having achieved his dream Woodhouse admitted that his fairy tale journey was now at an end and after 28 fights, with 22 wins, the title win would be his last fight.

Here at Vital Boxing we wish Curtis all the best and his story should be an inspiration for those who have dreams to be realized, farewell and thanks Curtis.
