'If It's Boxing, It's Vital'

The Verbal Sparring Begins!

As May 31st draws nearer, although to me it still feels a million miles away, the tickets for the fight went on sale today.

As is normally the case for such an event, a press conference was held to kick-start proceedings.

Eddie Hearn, the promoter behind the fight, got proceedings under way by talking up a fight that doesn’t really need talking up, by remarking,

'In terms of British boxing history, this is something you may never see again. I think this is the biggest ever. This is a huge moment. Things like this may only come around once in our era.'

But as for the fighters, it was a confident George Groves that stepped forward first, remarking to those in attendance,

'Well this is it. Everything for a reason. Carl Froch now has to fight a match he does not want to take, a fight he knows he cannot possibly win.”

'It was stonewall robbery the first time, everyone knows this. It brings me great joy this is happening. Froch did not want to take this fight. I think that is round one to me. Round two is that this is in my home town, with my home crowd. He has to travel here for the fight. Maybe that is fate. Know this Carl, this is perfect for me now. There is not one thing that will be chance.'

Prompting the challenger to retort,

'This looks to be one of the biggest fights in British boxing... a fantastic stadium, it doesn't get any bigger to showcase my skills and I am so excited. I'm excited this opportunity has come along at this time of my career. I've been a pro over 10 years and to fight in an outdoor stadium - the last I remember is Ricky Hatton at the Man City stadium... seeing a carpet of people and hoping I would get a chance like that.'

'I've had some bonding time with my baby daughter but I've missed the gym and missed boxing - that's bad news for George Groves because I'm looking forward to getting back and doing the business. The last time I felt this confident and focused was the build-up for the Lucian Bute fight and we all know what happened then [a fifth-round knockout win for Froch in 2012].'

And so, just as we expected, the verbal sparring has begun!
