And the Losers Are?

With the big Saturday night promotion, at the Manchester Arena, over it’s a time for reflection.

The final few days leading up to the show must have been a nightmare for Frank Warren and his team. With Dereck Chisora withdrawing through injury and then finding a replacement to fight Tyson Fury, Frank then had to deal with the sudden withdrawal of Tyson Fury due to illness in the family.

There was no time to reschedule the top-of-the-bill fight and Billy Joe Saunders was subsequently elevated to top-of-the-bill status.

The promotion itself proved to be entertaining enough but who were the losers on the night?

Well firstly, having withdrawn from the fight, although understandably so, Fury now finds himself in the unenviable position of having a third big fight slip by the wayside at a crucial time of his career. It remains to be seen whether Fury will hang about for the fight with Chisora, although we hear he is contractually bound to do so, or whether he’ll seek another route towards the top remains to be seen.

Secondly, we have to look at poor old Alexander Ustinov. Having been launched into the limelight, after Chisora had broken his hand sparring against him, the Belarusian had a golden chance to gate-crash the world title scene. A win over Fury would have seen him, quite probably; a chance to fight for a version of the world crown and his record suggested he was quite capable of doing just that with only one loss in thirty fights.

But, it would appear that Ustinov won’t receive a penny for putting himself on the line as his fee was only payable after he’d fought.

But perhaps, unfortunately, the biggest losers on the night were some of the paying public, the punters who eagerly lap up the fights between big heavyweight and those who pay good money for tickets, accommodation and travel. Three times in the last two years they’ve dipped out of what they deserve, let’s hope next time they get lucky big-time!
