Quigg v Otake (Liverpool Arena 22/11/14)

At the Liverpool Echo Arena tonight, Scott Quigg is back in action.

The Bury fighter will be making the fifth defence of his WBA super-bantamweight title against the Japanese fighter Hidenori Otake.

But Quigg is looking beyond his defence tonight and harbours ambitions of being involved in some mega-fights that will see him become a major name in the sport whilst also capturing world titles at different weights.

But the much talked about fight against the IBF super-bantamweight champion, Carl Frampton, remains on his radar with Quigg attributed as having remarked about the Irish fighter,

“I don’t need Carl Frampton to define my career.”

“There’s Leo Santa Cruz, there’s other big fights out there. There’s big fights at featherweight.”

“Carl Frampton is not someone I need, but we are both lucky we are around at the same time and we have a rivalry”

“Joe Calzaghe missed The Eubank, Benn and Michael Watson rivalry.”

“He fought Eubank at the end of his career, but if he was around in that mix just think of the fights he could have been involved in.”

“The fight’s not big because of me, it’s not big because of him. It’s big because of both of us.”

“We’ve got that rivalry and it needs to happen.”

“If the fight doesn’t happen I’m not going to sit and wait.”

“I don’t need Carl Frampton.”

“It’s one of those – do I want to fight him?”

“I do because I believe I’ll beat him and it’s a fight everyone wants to see and it’s a fight I want.”

However, although looking to the future is a necessity, Quigg’s opponent tonight has his own plans to re-write history with Hidenori Otake remarking to the media ahead of the bout tonight,

“Scott is a good fighter, he’s got a tight guard, he punches hard and his body is strong. I believe in myself - that’s all that matters. I won the Japanese title three years ago and in Japan, the lower weight levels are the hardest.”

“I’ve defended it four times and often against the number one challenger.”

“We’re grateful for the chance but we’re going to make it count and take the title home. I’ve had a dream to become the World champion and I want to make it a reality.”

You’ll need to be on your guard tonight otherwise all that hard work and all those future plans could go down the proverbial plughole!
