Macklin Wants Smith to Target the Body!

Tonight, over in Berlin, Paul Smith will be hoping that, at the second attempt, he can dethrone Arthur Abraham and become the WBO super-middleweight champion of the world.

But, having been beaten in the first meeting, although the margin of the scoring was absolutely scandalous, how does Smith go about getting the result he dreams of?

Matthew Macklin, a very respectable fighter who has fought on the world title stage, has his views on how Paul Smith should approach this fight. Macklin is of the opinion that Smith should, from the off, go for the body of the champion with his powerful left hooks.

If Smith can do that, Macklin is of the opinion that the champion can be worn down and that the title could then come back to Liverpool. In reviewing the first fight, Macklin believes that Smith lost the fight in the first six rounds when he didn’t throw enough leather.

Talking about the option discussed, Macklin has had this to say to the media,

“Paul Smith has got a beautiful left hook to the body, doesn’t throw it enough in my opinion and I think it’s a shot that he should be looking to utilize.

“Don’t wait until the sixth or seventh round; throw it early on – first round straightaway. Really take the wind out of his sails, take his legs away.”

My only problem with that is if Smith goes for, in a way, broke he could be susceptible to a powerful counter-punch from Abraham and having been stopped before, it could be lights out.

However, we can but wait and see what approach Smith takes but it has all the makings of a great night over in Berlin.
