Tyson Tamer Teddy Atlas Provides Map To #Maypac

ESPN's boxing guru says Money-Manny is no foregone conclusion

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao held a press conference in LA yesterday (11/3/15) to stoke the fire for their May 2 Las Vegas showdown.

Not that the richest fight of all time needs it.

Seats anywhere on the MGM Grand ground level have been priced at $3,500 – far more than the Super Bowl even.

Most intriguing moment yesterday? The insights of ESPN boxing guru Teddy Atlas. Former trainer of heavyweight champ Michael Moorer Atlas is perhaps best known for his time at the Catskill Boxing Club under the legendary Cus D’Amato. Atlas was let go by the club in 1981 after a confrontation with star pupil Mike Tyson. In an interview with ESPN’s Dan Lebatard that can be seen on YouTube, Atlas tells how the then 15-year old Tyson ”behaved inappropriately” with an 11-year old female from Atlas’s family.

In the interview Atlas recounts how he held a .38 to Tyson’s ear and, when that didn't seem to work, fired the gun, missing the future Iron Mike ”on purpose”. Apparently that worked…

Back to yesterday, Atlas refused to join in with the rest of the pre-fight backing of Mayweather. Instead, the training guru offered intriguing insights into the strange things that can happen before big fights.

Referring to Mayweather’s career-launching win over ‘golden boy’ Oscar De La Hoya and another mega-fight Marvin Hagler v Sugar Ray Leonard, Atlas described how both De La Hoya and Hagler were so very anxious to get in the ring with their opponents that they over-trained and ”left it in the gym” - the rest is history.

As far as #Maypac goes those cautionary tales cut both ways; but Teddy Atlas was clearly suggesting that anybody looking to plunge on Floyd might just be in for an unpleasant surprise.
