Is Tonight the Night for DeGale?

Tonight, across the pond, James DeGale has the chance to make history.

DeGale will be stepping into the ring to try and win the IBF super-middleweight belt, the very belt vacated by Carl Froch.

However, DeGale faces one tough cookie in the shape of Andre Dirrell.

Both fighters have lost just the once. DeGale lost a controversial points decision against George Groves, whilst Dirrell lost a split decision against Carl Froch.

Those defeats meant both boxers had to climb back to the top of the ratings, something they have both achieved and the general consensus of opinion is that this fight could go either way, it could be that close.

DeGale knows that winning a world title on American soil is something few Brits have done, but it is a task the London fighter reckons he is up to, remarking ahead of the fight,

'It's a chance that I can't let slip.

“People aren't going to give me opportunities again, because I'm too good - no-one is going to fight me for a voluntary defence.'

DeGale has never been one to lack confidence and perhaps that is why he’s not got the level fo support many other British fighters have had.

But DeGale is right, this is an opportunity he must not let slip, a defeat could see the Brit having to wait a long time for another shot.

As for Dirrell, he seems as equally as confident, remarking ahead of the bout,

'I'm much hungrier than I was early in my career and more focused mentally.

'He feels like he's an undefeated fighter, I feel like I'm an undefeated fighter. But we both have a lot to prove. I know I'm faster. I know I'm smarter and I know I'm a better boxer. It's just as simple as that.'

It promises to be a cracker, don’t miss it!
