'If It's Boxing, It's Vital'

Froch Calls it a Day!

I can’t say that I’m really surprised that Carl Froch has decided to hang his gloves up and retire from boxing.

The only thing that has surprised me is that it has taken the 38-year-old to announce it.

My money was on Froch announcing his retirement the moment his Las Vegas swansong against Julio Cesar Chavez Junior went down the proverbial plug-hole.

However, in retiring Froch has a left his legacy in the sport as 33 victories in 35 fights would suggest.

And if there is a better way to go out than knocking George Groves out and successfully defending his IBF and WBA title, at Wembley Stadium last May, in front of 80,000 supporters then somebody better point it out to me.

Discussing his reasons to exit the sport, Froch had this to say to the media,

'I have nothing left to prove and my legacy speaks for itself. I'm incredibly proud of what I have achieved in boxing but now is the right moment to hang up my gloves.

'If I could fight again physically I would, but mentally I'm not sure. I think the desire has gone.

'There will always be options and it's never going to stop. There will always be someone next in line to take my scalp. If that never goes away, when am I ever going to retire?

'There's still a fire in the belly but it's been too long now. I don't know if I can go one more time.'

And if that doubt exists then it really is time to call time in a sport that is very unforgiving in its very nature.
