Flanagan Retains WBO Lightweight Title in Style

In Manchester last night, Terry Flanagan defended his WBO lightweight crown in spectacular style.

The 26-year-old, making his first defence off the title he won against Jose Zepeda, back in July, was taking on the toughest opponent of his career in the shape of the American fighter Diego Magdaleno.

Flanagan cheered on by the vociferous support in the arena, wasted no time in getting on top of his opponent and Magdaleno was in trouble as early as the second round when a huge right hand saw him hit the canvas.

Oozing with confidence Flanagan went in for the kill and a flurry of punches soon had the American in big trouble and it wasn’t long before the referee, quite rightly, stepped in to stop the bout with Magdaleno in no fit shape to defend himself.

After the bout, a jubilant Flanagan had this to say,

'After his first knockdown I didn't go down too daft but after I caught him with another few shots I knew he was there for a taking.

'A few people said I didn't deserve to be world champion but I proved tonight that I am a true world champion.'

The win takes Flanagan’s professional record to 29-0 and if there were any doubts that the title had come his way rather fortunately against Zepeda, back in July, Flanagan proved last night that he is a worthy world champion and an exciting one to watch as well.
