'If It's Boxing, It's Vital'

Calzaghe Was Never Tempted

One of my pet hates is boxers that retire and then, for one reason or another, decide to make a comeback.

Those that do are usually a pale shadow of what they used to be and, in my opinion, they end up tarnishing their reputations as they chase glory that their aging bodies cannot achieve.

Thankfully, one of my favourite boxers of all-time,Joe Calzaghe , has never been tempted to make a comeback an in a wonderful interview I stumbled upon, the fighter who retired with a perfect record of 46 wins from 46 fights remarked about his insistence he’ll stay retired,

'Losing the weight and getting punched in the head - nope, don't fancy it. I've done my bit.”

But it appears that Calzaghe isn’t prepared to abandon the sport altogether, further adding,

'Promoting is a no-no - that's hard work. Training is a full-time job, but I don't have time to do that full-time.

'But managing is something I'll be good at. I was self-managed for a lot of my career as well so I know both sides. That will be perfect for me.'

However, there is a good chance that we will see a Calzaghe in the ring again with Joe admitting that one of his sons, Joe Junior, taking up the sport, with Joe adding,

'I never really pushed my boys into boxing but I guess it's in the blood.

'I don't mind as long as he takes it seriously and he's happy.

'I can see he's got the dedication then I encourage him. Because there's a lot of pressure on him anyway because of who is father is, so I just say be yourself and just have fun and do your best.'

Which leads me to ask, could we see another Calzaghe father and son partnership heading towards a world title somewhere down the road?
