Murray – I’ll Not Fight Abroad Again!

As the St Helens fighter vows to box on.

Ahead of the epic encounter, in Hannover, between Arthur Abraham and Martin Murray, a fight which Murray lost by a split decision, the suggestion had been bandied about that a defeat would leave Murray possibly facing the prospect of retiring.

However, after the dust had settled on his defeat to the durable veteran Abraham, it seems that the last thought on Murray’s mind was retirement.

In fact the St Helen’s fighter is keen to box on but on his own terms.

Murray has implied that he will never head away from these shores to box again with Murray adamant he was on the end of a home-town decision in Hannover, with the super-middleweight proclaiming,

“I thought I had it and if it had been anywhere but Germany I would have got it.

“What can you do? It’s what you are up against over here and I knew that beforehand and took the gamble. This was the hardest of the lot of them to take because I thought I had done it and this was my time.

“I just can’t box away ever again. I started on the road and thought I was going to finish on the road.

“But this has made me think that if another shot comes up I just won’t take it away from England.

“I don’t want to retire. I feel like I’m just getting to my peak.

“I just need a bit of luck and a world title shot at home.”

I’m not sure I agree with Murray when it comes to his feelings about the decision, I thought his corner should have been more vociferous in the latter rounds urging their fighter to make sure he left the judges with no choice other than to give him the verdict.

As for another title fight, after four attempts you have to wonder whether that chance will come along in the not too distant future unless Abraham can be persuaded to come to England, for a big purse, by Murray’s management.
