Wilder Gets Away With the Easy Option (Again)

With Tyson Fury gate-crashing the world heavyweight scene big-time two weeks ago tonight, when he wrenched those belts from the long-serving champion Wladimir Klitschko, it propelled Tyson into the world spotlight.

Across the pond one Deontay Wilder, the holder of the only belt Fury didn’t possess until the IBF rudely intervened, had his nose put out of joint.

On 16th January 2016, at the Barclays Centre in New York, Wilder will once again step into the ring, to make yet another voluntary defence (are you reading this at the IBF) against an opponent who is only rated #8 by the WBC, Artur Szpilka.

Szpilka, who has a record of 20-1 with 15 of those wins coming by knockout, will be facing up to a champion who has a record that reads 35-0 with 34 wins coming by way of knockout.

However, the challenger is of the opinion that he has a chance of causing a huge upset and has remarked to the media,

“It will be a great fight for the fans. Wilder has a very open style, I will try to shorten the distance, get close, hit him with combinations, we will see what happens. I will be there to beat him, take risks.”

It’ll be interesting to see if Szpilka’s ambition can get him past the first huge right-hand Wilder will throw.

My feeling is that having had his thunder stolen by Fury’s incredible feat, Wilder will want to put on a show. I just wonder though, whether Tyson Fury will take the opportunity to be at ringside to taunt the WBC champ!
