Charles Martin Wins IBF Heavyweight Crown

On the same bill as Dentay Wilder's WBC world heavyweight title fight, in Brooklyn, New York, was the IBF's version of the same belt.

Tyson Fury was the holder of the IBF heavyweight crown after snatching it from the grasp of Wladimir Klitschko, over in Dusseldorf.

But boxing politics saw Fury relinquish the belt after being told he had to make a mandatory defence against Vyacheslav Glazkov when Tyson was already committed to a re-match against Wladimir.

With the belt vacant the IBF sanctioned bout between Charles Martin and Vyacheslav Glazkov for the belt.

As it turned out it was something of a non-event.

Martin was declared the new IBF heavyweight champion after Glazkov was forced to retire in the third round with what looked like a serious knee injury, hardly the outcome he'd have hoped for having waited so long for the opportunity to fight for the title.

Talking about his injury, the previously unbeaten Glazkov had this to say,

"I slipped and I felt a sharp pain in my knee and I felt it give out. I'm very upset. I want a rematch when I recover."

Whereas the new champion, talking about becoming the IBF heavyweight champion of the world, had this to say,

"He just didn't have enough power. I was going to catch up with him eventually."

The result takes Martin's record to 23 wins an done draw whilst Glazkov's slips to 21 wins, one draw and one loss.
