Flanagan Says He’ll Stop Matthews Tonight

This evening Terry Flanagan will be defending his WBO lightweight world title against Derry Mathews, in Liverpool.

It is a domestic tear-up that tops the bill and the reigning WBO champion, Terry Flanagan, is under no illusions as to the outcome of the fight.

Flanagan, who is unbeaten in 29 fights is convinced that he is going to stop Matthews who, although the more experienced fighter when it comes to the number of fights he’s had, has never fought at world title level before.

Talking about the contest, Flanagan has remarked to the media,

'I think Derry's kidding himself if he thinks he's going to beat me.

'I'm going to win by stoppage. I'll stop him but I think Derry will go out on his shield.'

Flanagan also goes into this fight knowing he’s beaten Matthews before, a fight that took place in the Prizefighter series back in 2012, with that fight also being in Liverpool, prompting the WBO champion to add,

'I've beat him in his own backyard before in Prizefighter and I'm going to do it again.

'The difference between us now is I'm a heavier, natural lightweight. I'm bigger, better, stronger and feeling very confident.'

However, Matthews shouldn’t be completely written off, he’s boxed more rounds than Flanagan, 142 more, and hasn’t been stopped in over three years.

Our money is on Flanagan to retain his title but this fight might be a lot closer than many pundits are assuming.
