Campbell Fights for Commonwealth Title Tonight

Tonight, at the Sheffield Arena, one of our London 2012 Olympic Gold medal winners is looking to get his professional career back on track.

Luke Campbell had made the perfect start to his professional career winning his first thirteen fights but, last time out Campbell lost via a split decision against the French fighter Yvan Mendy at the O2 Arena in London.

Tonight, Campbell is facing the all-action fighter Gary Sykes with the Commonwealth lightweight crown at stake on the under-card of the IBF world welterweight fight between Kell Brook and Kevin Bizier.

In the aftermath of his surprise defeat last time out Campbell completely changed his boxing lifestyle choosing to move to Florida to take up training with Jorge Rubio. Campbell has been away for seven weeks, in his training camp, remarking about being separated from his family,

“I'm a family man - all I do is train and be with my family - so for me to go away for seven weeks was really hard, but the sacrifices I have made have really pushed me.

“'Jorge is a passionate boxing man and he wants me to be a champion as much as I do. I believe I had so much more potential that nobody was seeing, but Jorge has been working hard on really bringing it out of me.'”

But, returning to that nigh back in December 2015 when his unbeaten record ended, Campbell offered an admission that he should have pulled out of the bout, admitting he felt fatigued in the build and remarking,

“It was a tough lesson to learn and I should never have had to learn it at this stage of my career. I'm not making excuses but I shouldn't have been in the ring that night. But I have learned from the experience. It is in the past and now I am determined to move on.”

Tonight will be a tough fight but we’re taking Campbell to get the verdict, a second consecutive defeat would, at this stage of his career, be unthinkable
