Burns Set to Make History Tonight

Tonight, up in Glasgow, Ricky Burns could become the first ever Scottish boxer to win world titles at three different weights.

Burns, now 33-yers of age, has previously won world titles at super-featherweight and lightweight and, tonight, is bidding to become the WBA super-lightweight champion.

Burns will step into the ring to contest the title with the Italian fighter Michele Di Rocco, a fighter who has lost just once in thirty-four fights.

For Burns it is a remarkable return to the world title scene with the fighter from Coatbridge going through a spell where he lost three out of four fights before winning his last two.

However, Burns is relishing the prospect of mixing it with Di Rocco tonight and ahead of the fight has remarked to the media, about fighting in Glasgow, on home turf,

“This hasn’t increased the pressure on me at all. I treat every fight the same.

“I couldn’t be happier to go for another world title on home soil in Glasgow.

“Everyone knows I just focus on being ready to go in there and win I don’t think about all the other stuff.”

And on his opponent,

“We’ve watched a few of his fights. He has 18 knockouts from 40 wins, so he can punch. He’s going to be strong for the first few rounds. He likes to try and set his own pace, get behind the jab and work in flurries.

“I’ll try to stick to the game plan but once you get in there it could be a different story. I’m always happy to oblige if someone wants a toe-to-toe war.

“It will be tough but I’m confident of getting the job done however it goes.”

We’ve got our fingers crossed for Ricky, let’s hope it’s a special night for the lad from Coatbridge.
