Golovkin v Eubank Moves Closer

With Chris Eubank Jnr set to make the first defence of the British middleweight title he won against Nick Blackwell this Saturday, against Tom Doran, on the under-card of the huge promotion at the O2 Arena this Saturday, it appears Team Eubank have a much bigger fight on their minds.

Reports are suggesting that Chris Eubank Jnr is very close to securing a fight against Gennady Golovkin, a fighter who many see as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

The fight, if it comes off (and we see no reason why it shouldn’t), would see Eubank (22-1 with 17 wins coming by knockout), challenge the man who holds the IBF / IBO / WBA / WBC versions of the middleweight title.

Eddie Hearn, the match-maker trying to put the fight together, is of the opinion such a bout would draw 40,000 spectators to an outside venue.

Talking about the possibility of the fight taking place, Hearn has remarked,

“When we signed Eubank, he said, ‘I want the Golovkin fight. Go and get it.’ So that’s what I’ve been doing, and we are in deep negotiations with him. We’ve given him a wonderful deal. We’re pretty much agreed. We need to beat Tom Doran next Saturday, and then if everybody really wants the fight, it gets made. Wembley is not available. It’s difficult running an outdoor event in September time. I think it could do 40,000. I think it’s a huge pay-per-view fight. I know he’s [Eubank Jr.] a huge favourite to beat Tom Doran. Doran is dangerous and he’s got to keep his head down. I think as long as everyone wants that fight, an all the words from the camps, they do, I think Eubank-Golovkin has a great chance of getting made.”

Let’s hope the contracts can get signed and we end this summer of boxing with a huge fight that could define Eubank’s career.
