WBA Haven’t Sanctioned Golovkin’s Title Fight

On Saturday night at the O2 Arena, Gennady Golovkin makes his first trip to the UK to fight.

Many British fight fans have been waiting for the appearance of the fighter rated the best in the world for many a year.

The fact that he is set to fight the Sheffield fighter, Kell Brook, makes it even more intriguing.

Both fighters have unbeaten records but Brook has moved up two weights to try and become the first fighter to stop the man who has been so dominant at the 160 pound weight level.

On Saturday night Golovkin’s IBF / IBO and WBC middleweight titles will be up for grabs, but not his WBA middleweight strap.

It turns out that although the WBA are happy to let Golovkin take the fight they will not be sanctioning the fight as a WBA world title fight.

Normally fighters would be stripped if they took a route whereby they’re not sanctioned by the governing body of a belt they hold, but the WBA are no fools and know that having Golovkin as their champion is very advantageous.

Talking about their decision, a decision I feel is a correct one, the WBA president Gilberto Mendoza Junior is quoted as having remarked,

“What I most regret is that there are no boxers at 160 pounds who will fight against ‘Triple G,’ and Brook has to move up two divisions to fight against him.”

I suppose three belts is better than none though!
