'If It's Boxing, It's Vital'

A Real Money Spinner

The announcement soon after Anthony Joshua had stopped Eric Molina relating to Joshua taking on Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium, on 29th April, has got us all buzzing.

The last time Wembley Stadium was used for a fight 80,000 packed into the venue to see the re-match between Carl Froch and George Groves.

By coincidence, the first fighter on the bill that night was Anthony Joshua, who was nothing more than a fledgling heavyweight that night.

This time however Joshua is set to top the bill and Eddie Hearn is hoping that the authorities will allow him to sell 90,000 tickets, with Eddie quoted as remarking,

'It will definitely be 80,000 but we will ask for permission to go to 90,000.

'London mayor Sadiq Khan was at the Boxing Writers' Club dinner talking about how he wants to bring major fights to London, so he better help us out.'

If Hearn can get permission to sell 90,000 tickets the attendance will match the record crowd for a fight in the United Kingdom.

Back in 1939, at the White City Stadium, a similar figure poured through the gates to watch a light-heavyweight clash between Len Harvey and Jock McAvoy.

Hearn knows the fight will be a huge money-spinner, the aforementioned fight between Froch and Groves grossed more than £22 million.

There’s also the real possibility that the pay-per-view takings could also exceed the current record of 1.2 million buys when Ricky Hatton fought Floyd Mayweather Jnr in Las Vegas in 2007.
