What Does the Future Hold for Tony Bellew?

4 March 2017 will see Tony Bellew take on David Haye at the 02 Arena in London.

Although the fight has no major belts up for grabs, it could be of huge significance for the current WBC cruiserweight champion Bellew.

Having been given permission by the WBC to fight Haye and thereby freeze his WBC title, Bellew is now suggesting that he may remain at heavyweight rather than return to cruiserweight where he is scheduled to make a defence against the winner of the bout between Marco Huck and Mairis Bredis.

Here at Vital Boxing we’re suspicious people and we reckon that Bellew, if he puts up a decent fight against Haye, has his eyes on the pot-of-gold available in the heavyweight division.

But just what would be perceived as a performance good enough to ensure he can fight as a heavyweight?

A win over Haye, who has a record that reads 28-2 with 26 wins coming by way of knockout, would propel him to a new level. A loss on points would enhance his potential in a similar manner and even the prospect of being knocked out (late-on) by Haye would leave the door open. However, a crushing early knock-out defeat would see that heavyweight door and its financial rewards kicked firmly shut.

So what will March 4th bring for Tony Bellew?

A career as a heavyweight and a possible future fight with Anthony Joshua or will it be a weight too far, a knockout and a return to the cruiserweight division?

For me it is the latter, how about you?
