Haye v Bellew – Referee

The build up to the clash between David Haye and Tony Bellew, at the 02 Arena in London, has been one of the most controversial for ages.

Exchanges of insults have been common-place and we’re not quite sure what to expect on Saturday night.

Both boxers have threatened to knock each other spark out believing they’ll end the others career.

Haye has taken it a step further by suggesting that he might toy with Bellew before applying the killer finish.

It’s a fight that will need a stern referee to take charge, somebody who can keep things civilised and prevent something akin to anarchy breaking out.

The man-in-charge of this non-title heavyweight clash this Saturday night, has been named as Phil Edwards.

Edwards is 62-years-old and heralds from Preston and is a former insurance broker.

It seems that both camps have approved of the appointment so at least that’s one obstacle overcome.

As for experience, in recent times Edwards has refereed the WBO world lightweight fight between Terry Flanagan and Derry Mathews and was also a judge at the IBF world middleweight title fight when James DeGale beat Andre Dirrell, in Boston, to claim the title.

Edwards could be in for a short nights work if either boxer connects with the other with a punch flush on the chin, or he could be forced to keep stepping in to break up an ugly brawl, it’s hard to predict what sort of night we’re in for, is it not?
