Never Under-Estimate an Opponent!
Across the pond, over in Montreal, there was a shock in a WBC light-heavyweight clash.
With Chad Dawson
facing Adonis Stevenson
, it was widely expected that the former would emerge victorious.
In fact, ahead of the fight, Dawson was so confident of a win he’d dismissed his opponent with the remark,“If the only thing you can say is he’s a good puncher, I feel sorry for him.”
Words that came back to haunt him big-style when an explosive left hook, in the first round, put Dawson on the seat of his pants. Although Dawson struggled to his feet the referee wouldn’t let him continue.
The irony of this article being that Stevenson was desperate to fight Carl Froch but became frustrated due to the fact that Froch was intent on a second fight with Mikkel Kessler and decided to move up.
The new champion, who is 35 and didn’t step into the sport until 2006, after a spell in jail, was, as you’d expect, pretty jubilant about his win I a fight whereby he showed his explosive power, remarking, “You know why people don’t want me to fight now.”
Could Froch be tempted to take on Stevenson or is his future already plotted with a showdown against Andre Ward the light at the end of the tunnel?
